ABOUT SELEKA
Seleka International Art Society Inc [SIASI] is an artist-run initiative co-founded by artists Tevita Latu and Taniela Petelo. A sanctuary for young upcoming local Tongan artists, Seleka's home base is a hand-crafted fale situated on the shores of Fanga'uta Lagoon.
The Selekarians meet each night to drink kava, play music and make art. They are constantly involved in community-based projects, raising awareness and elevating the status of art in Tonga.
Exhibiting locally and internationally, their work challenges the status quo, skewing traditional art practice with an irreverent contemporary twist. Excitingly, Seleka has been commissioned by several government ministries to create work and facilitate workshops. The group has also been supported by several local arts initatives (On The Spot and Langafonua 'a Fafine Tonga) and organisations (Alliance Francaise de Tonga, 'Atenisi Institute and Waterfront Tonga).
In 2016, Tevita and Taniela represented both Tonga and Seleka at Waikato University, New Zealand. The artists were invited to take part in the University's artist-in-residence program, where they worked alongside other artists, creating artworks for a group exhibition, Putahi, which celebrated the diverse achievements of Polynesian artists.
